Crown Lengthening

At Fort Rouge Dental Group in Winnipeg, our dentists may recommend crown lengthening to improve the overall health of the gum tissue to prepare for restorative or cosmetic procedures.

What is crown lengthening?

Crown lengthening involves re-contouring or reshaping a tooth and the surrounding tissue to prepare for placement of a crown or other restorative or cosmetic treatment. Typically a small amount of tissue, and in some cases bone, is removed during crown lengthening.

Following the procedure, the teeth will look noticeably longer as the gums have now been re-positioned.

Why would I need crown lengthening?

Crown lengthening may be recommended for many reasons.

Most commonly crown lengthening is performed on patients with severe damage to the teeth due to gum disease or on patients with excess gum tissue, referred to as a gummy smile.

Removing excess gum tissue can restore a balanced, healthy look to improve the aesthetic of the smile.

Gum re-contouring may be performed on a single tooth or the entire gumline to help improve the aesthetic of a patient's smile.
