What is periodontal (gum) scaling?Periodontics scaling helps to remove calculus and plaque buildup from the surface of the crown and root. An irrigation process may also be implemented to administer an antimicrobial agent below the gums that can help reduce bacteria. What is root planing?Root planning is a dental treatment in which cementum and surface dentin with unwanted microorganisms, toxins and tartar, is removed. The root of the tooth is smoothed over to help promote healing. Clean and smooth root surfaces help prevent bacteria from developing. Why would I require scaling and root planing?If you are experiencing significant inflammation of the gum tissue and surrounding bone, you may require gum scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar (calculus). Treatment can also help improve bad breath, prevent periodontal (gum) disease and improve the aesthetic of a patient's smile. |
